Anyone who knows Kenya will say that the root of most problems (AIDS, childhood pregnancy, female circumcision, poverty etc..,) is caused by ignorance. WE always hear about how we should educate the Kenyans about AIDS, but if they don't have the basic knowledge that school offers, or if they do not attend school - then where and how will they understand or hear?

The 'Food2Learn' programme-

Given enough support, the Food2Learn programme could make a significant difference to Kenya's future. It costs relatively little, and no sponsor money is spent on administration. It is cheap to run, cost effective, simple, and ensures that the help goes directly to where it is needed. Since Kenya introduced free primary school education (the first eight years of learning) in January 2003, one million extra children are now attending school. This is great news for the children and the country, but there is an estimated one and a half million children still not attending school because of poverty................... Some families are unable to pay for the uniform and textbooks and some children would choose to work on the land and maybe get a meal, rather than go to school with an empty stomach. "Food 2 Learn" wants to assist these children. The programme will buy each child a school uniform, games kit, shoes, stationery, pens etc. We pay for them to have lunch on school days at a local "hotel" (a small tin hut serving beans and maize), giving the money direct to the owner on a weekly basis. We will also provide older girls with their personal hygiene, as this is another deterrent from attending school. Each situation is investigated to ensure that help is only given where it is needed. Initially this programme will operate in the Kisumu area of Kenya.

The 'Food2Learn' programme costs.....

The programme costs £6.50 a month for each child at primary school. Those interested in sponsoring a child would be given photos, letters and progress reports.

The 'Food2Learn' programme local administration:-

Every week, David Ochieng, the Food2Learn Administrator in Kenya, visits the places where the children eat and checks on food and their progress at School. David is supported by a local committee in Kenya, the Assistant Chief, John Kiaka is Chairman and Yunia Hawi, Assistant Head at Kotetni School is serving as Secretary.
