PROGRAMME
BACKGROUND

Given enough support, the Food2Learn programme could make a significant difference to Kenya's future. It costs relatively little, and no sponsor money is spent on administration. It is cheap to run, cost effective, simple, and ensures that the help goes directly to where it is needed. Since Kenya introduced free primary school education (the first eight years of learning) in January 2003, one million extra children are now attending school. This is great news for the children and the country, but there is an estimated one and a half million children still not attending school because of poverty................... Some families are unable to pay for the uniform and textbooks and some children would choose to work on the land and maybe get a meal, rather than go to school with an empty stomach. "Food 2 Learn" wants to assist these children. The programme will buy each child a school uniform, games kit, shoes, stationery, pens etc. We pay for them to have lunch on school days at a local "hotel" (a small tin hut serving beans and maize), giving the money direct to the owner on a weekly basis. We will also provide older girls with their personal hygiene, as this is another deterrent from attending school. Each situation is investigated to ensure that help is only given where it is needed. Initially this programme is operating in the Kisumu area of Kenya, but with help and support could be expanded.....
