BACKGROUND
PROGRAMME

Many years ago James Dawe took a "holiday" to South America where he saw and was moved by the plight of 'street kids'. His compassion was totally aroused and he doubled the length of his "holiday" to work with these needy children. This made him realise that he should spend time to do more to help needy children - in time and with support from many individuals and churches - he set up Kanyawegi Childrens Home in Kisumu, Kenya. From this experience and his growing understanding of the local need came the seed of the idea for Food 2 Learn. Anyone who knows Kenya will say that the root of most problems (AIDS, childhood pregnancy, female circumcision, poverty etc..,) is caused by ignorance. We always hear about how we should educate the Kenyans about AIDS, but if they don't have the basic knowledge that school offers, or if they do not attend school - then where and how will they understand or hear? Children who themselves and their families have little awareness of where their next meal is coming from do not tend to put school first, but rather the means to feed themselves is paramount. Often the children are the least ill of the family to do this so they miss out on a basic education - despite Kenyas' improved provision of schooling.
